This Sunday @Mosaic
At Mosaic, we try to avoid the simplistic, "one-size fits all", made-for-seminar plans for doubling your success, "get rich quick" approaches to life.
That's what you might find under the heading "The Secret." But if "The Secret" was true and really worked for everyone, then why is it still a secret?
All that being said, what the heck! Here's an idea that works for everybody, everybody can do it, and best of all... it's free!
This Sunday's message is called The Shamgar Strategy.
The what?
The Shamgar Strategy - it can be applied to your marriage, your job, your parenting skills, your finances, your life mission and it even gets out those tough ground in grass stains!
Seriously... this is serious!
And best of all, if you don't like it, you can just forget all about it and keep the great music, a new friend, coffee and bagel for free! All are Mosaic's gift to you.
Bring a friend with you and Mosaic will be twice as fun. Promise!
For those offended by this paragraph, think of it this way.
Life is complex, but it doesn't have to be complicated.
Let's discover, together, some of the timeless wisdom from scripture that can easily be applied to all of our lives today.
The Shamgar Strategy... works every time! (sorry, couldn't resist)

Beyond Acts - The Continuing Story
The final word to us from the last, written, chapter of Acts is that the "Acts of the Apostles" are continuous to this day until Jesus comes back for His church.
How do we follow Paul's example, and in the footsteps of the Apostles, on the path of the Way?
What does that look like, especially to others who would see us, that would cause them to call us "Christians"?
How are we following Him daily, in all of our interactions with all of our communities?
What choices do we make to stay on the Way?

After the shipwreck on Malta, Paul is quite busy!
While there, Paul:
- survives a poisonous snake bite
- heals someone with fever and dysentery
- preached another anointed sermon and more believe the gospel
Not your "normal" island vacation, is it?
Finally, Paul continues on to Rome to wait for Caesar.
The final word to us from this chapter is that the "Acts of the Apostles" are continuous to this day until Jesus comes back for the church.

Acts 27 - A Three-Hour Tour
On a boat, sounds like a nice little half-day trip, right? What could go wrong?
Well, it should have been a three- to four-hour boat trip. As it turns into a two-week voyage, "fateful" only begins to describe this journey aboard a tiny ship.
In the custody of a military officer named Julius, of the Augustan battalion in Caesarea, Paul boarded a ship from Adramyttium which was ready to sail toward Italy, and Paul's destination of Rome. Laden with tons of wheat from Egypt, the ship was sailing late in the shipping season, when typical good sailing weather would be increasingly interrupted by shifting winds, and storms.
Their situation resembled our current sailing season, especially in the Gulf and Caribbean areas, as hurricane season approaches.
The ship's owner expected payment for one more load of wheat for the season, so he took chances, against Paul's warning not to leave Crete.
Paul plays quite the tour guide, negotiating between the disparate groups on the boat, the prisoners, military guard, and sailors, to encourage and counsel them of God's intention to protect all 276 of them.

Acts 25 & 26 - Playing Bureaucracy, Like a Fiddle
Previously in the book of Acts we had related Paul's actions to his understanding of the advantages of bureaucracy, the human dynamic playing out in an overt organizational structure, with all its political intrigue and time-wasting inefficiency.
And, through understanding and acceptance of the political and religious realities, balancing hope and fear, through faith he persevered seeking, following God's will and plan.
Paul escalates his case from a Jerusalem neighborhood, to increasing levels of jurisdiction. This is quite reasonable in part to prevent that initial "death by mob" situation. As a Roman citizen he exercises his right to request an appeal to Caesar (the Roman Empire version of our Supreme Court), but must make his case at each level. He should be released for lack of evidence, but is still passed up the governmental chain. This protects him from the Jewish leaders' plans to kill him, and offers him more opportunities to share Jesus with increasingly influential leaders, leading perhaps ultimately, as Paul requested, to Caesar himself.
Paul defends himself to Governor Festus at Caesarea, makes his appeal to Caesar; King Agrippa and Queen Bernice visit Festus and ask to see, hear, and examine Paul, and offer to help Festus prepare a report for Rome.
The patient faith Paul must have had to endure these years of confinement; yet, nurtured by the Spirit, Paul accomplishes quite a lot during this time.

"What patient faith do we enjoy,
And, nurtured by His love,
Endure confinements of our life
To see Him soon above."

Advantages of Bureaucracy
Have you observed "time... slipping into the future"?
How about expectations on the calendar which do not occur when expected, but are put off until a later time?
There may be lots of reasons for such delays, from lack of adequate information for the decision maker, an unwillingness to make a decision, to waiting to see if the situation may change enough to no longer need the pending decision.
Bureacratic organizations are well-know in part for the extended time that it usually takes to accomplish actions, or even decisions to perform actions. This tends to work against our reasoned understanding, and our desire to move things along.
A person versed in procrastination will attest that, on occasion, a delay may accomplish the result of no longer requiring a decision or action at all. Bonus!
The Roman governor Felix delays judgement in Paul's case, which enables Paul to speak at length about the faith to both Felix and his wife, who was a Roman Jew.
Don't delay. Join us this Sunday to discuss Paul's opportunity.

Have you ever been around that person that always has to be right? You know the one. They argue over the smallest stuff and seem to take pride in their "right-ness."
Even when all evidence is against them, they find some way, some angle on how they were really right even though they were wrong!
What if you're that person? Are you aware of the subtle difference between being right and being righteous?
Being right is such a fragile thing and tough to hold onto.
Being righteous is more relational and something that can be given to others.

People in the movement begin to focus on themselves and others that are "like me". When we are unsure about our own value and worth, we sometimes try to artificially create it by devaluing those that are different than ourselves.
One of the incredible truths about faith in God is that we can enjoy individual uniqueness and at the same time be part of a community that has so much in common. This is how we can arrive at Diversity & Unity at the same time!

New series! This Sunday at Mosaic...
we begin a revolutionary journey into the story of the beginnings of the movement that we find ourselves caught up in... 2000 years later.
It's called "Actus Apostolorum", which all you Latin speakers know means "Acts of the Apostles". When Jesus loved, He loved in ways never imagined. Though rich, He became poor to love the poor, the forgotten, the overlooked and the sick. He played to the margins. By spending less at Christmas we have the opportunity to join Him in giving resources to those who need help the most. When Advent Conspiracy first began, four churches challenged this simple concept to their congregations. The result raised more than a half million dollars to aid those in need. One less gift. One unbelievable present in the name of Christ.

It starts with Jesus. It ends with Jesus. This is the holistic approach God had in mind for Christmas. It's a season where we are called to put down our burdens and lift a song up to our God. It's a season where love wins, peace reigns, and a king is celebrated with each breath. It's the party of the year. Entering the story of advent means entering this season with an overwhelming passion to worship Jesus to the fullest!
In our culture, we can be so easily distracted by everything else that comes at us concerning Christmas. What if God were trying to tap you on the shoulder right now? Could this be the Christmas that you finally "get" the gift God is trying to give you?

Sign of the Times Series Culminates with "Faith and Government"
New! Improved! More! Big Government! Big Religion!
One major "sign" of our times is Government's increasing involvement in moral and religious issues. While few would argue that we live in the stark times portrayed in George Orwell's "1984", many fear that we are heading in that stifling direction.
What is the proper balance between Government and Religion, Politics and Faith? What did Jesus tell us about citizenship, and how (or whether) to support Government?
Just a few days ago, on November 20th a group of Christian leaders signed and issued the Manhattan Declaration on Christian Conscience. This document calls for unity on social issues and opens the door for civil disobedience in order to preserve religious freedom.
As a Christ-follower, what are our responsibilities to our Government? What happens if they conflict with our commitment to Christ or His Church?
This Sunday, Mosaic concludes the Sign of the Times series by addressing Faith & Government.

As we continue examining the Signs of our Times, we next address the topic of "End Times". Coincidentally, a new movie opening this Friday, "2012" is based on the premise that the world we live in comes to a dramatically destructive end on December 21, 2012. But the up side is that there are already some cheap fares for Christmas - New Year's cruises!
Seriously, could there be any truth to this? How do we know? Once again, we examine biblical connections to events of our day and more importantly, what is our course of action?
Join the apocalypse... I mean the conversation this Sunday.

After discussing "Unexplainable" miracles, we welcome "Sign of the Times - This Could Get Biblical".
Are you overwhelmed by signs, confronted at almost every turn by election campaign signs, warning labels, bumper stickers, construction cautions, and more? Or do you try to block them out? An over-abundance of distracting signs at times makes it difficult to see the signs that we are looking for, or to see the signs that may help us to find our way.
Each week, during the Sign of the Times teaching series, we are discussing everyday signs, how they compare to "signs of the times", and answering questions that you may have, including: What is a "sign of the times"? What does it tell me? Who wants me to know? Now what do I do?
This Sunday, we begin our next conversation with "Epidemic (H1N1)". The time is right for this sign, right?

The Last Miracle.
On Saturday night, as people get dressed up and you can be sure, some of them will try and portray dead people. All in fun right? What lies beyond this life is still a great source of fascination and fear with us mortals. Believe it or not, Jesus has a conversation with a dead guy. What did He say? Come find out this Sunday @ Mosaic. Join the conversation as we explore the final message of this series, Jesus' Power Over Death.

This week is Miracle #6 - Jesus' Power over Suffering! When something bad happens, one of our first reactions is to figure out why. Not necessarily a bad thing to do when seeking to avoid the making same mistake. But what about when our motivation is to blame? Do we not often try and determine whose fault it is? What about the suffering of the innocent? Who's fault is that? Or... are we even asking the right question

Mosaic is exploring the 7 miracles of Jesus from the gospel of John. This week is miracle #5, Jesus' Power Over Nature. Are you afraid of natural catastrophes? There is a movie coming out in a few weeks called 2012. The entire premise is built around the idea that Mayan calendars end on a particular date in the year 2012. When that happens, the earth and forces of nature will come to a crashing end. How does that make you feel?

We begin a new teaching series next week that examines Jesus' extraordinary power in the lives of ordinary people.
What could explain how Jesus responds to everyday realities like details, distance, disease, scarcity, nature, suffering and death? It truly is unexplainable!

Are you fully alive? Do you feel connected to others?
There are both important questions for us. Each week, during the Signs of Life teaching series, we are discussing the signs of a healthy soul and a healthy community of faith, such as a church.
Signs of Life so far...
#1 Caring about something outside of yourself
#2 The presence of Others
#3 The Presence of God
#4 Making Your Mark
This coming Sunday, the conversation is about our sense of connection to the faith community, or Body of Christ. Some of us are waiting for that moment, that feeling. The feeling of being connected comes not from what others do or say towards us but instead, what we decide to do with our lives. Join Mosaic this week for a message called "Serve to Change."
Special guests: Over a year ago, Mosaic sent a team of people to Romania to work with Norman and Linda Patterson in an Eastern European region known as Transylvania. The Pattersons work with "gypsy" people groups in Romania and have been serving to change lives and culture. Come meet them and hear their story of connecting with life's "disconnected" people.

Another sign of being fully alive is the mark we make in the world. Are you making one? What is the evidence that any of us have actual lived on this planet? If you have ever wondered about the value or the impact of your life then this message will be memorable for you. Join the conversation about Making Your Mark, this Sunday.
Here's a challenge for this week: The message contains references to the place where all life comes from, a field of lentils and renewable sources of light. Can you find those three passages of scripture?

Are you fully alive? Or, are you just living?
That is the big question for this teaching series called, Signs of Life. Each week we are discussing the signs of a healthy soul and a healthy community of faith, such as a church.
The first 2 signs were...
#1 Caring about something outside of yourself
#2 The presence of others
This week, The Presence of God. How do you have that feeling that God is near and you are moving in the right direction? Come find out! Sunday, 10:00 AM and bring a few more "souls."

Are you truly alive? Or do you feel like you are going through the motions of a life that everyone else expects you to live? You were created to live a unique and fulfilling life. Are you living it? How do you know? What are the signs?

This Sunday, we begin discussing the mission of Mosaic... Why are we here? Where are we going? What's the point? All great questions.
We'd love to have you join the conversation.
Are you a Transformer?
Transformation is the word we use to describe the change in our life as we become the person God created us to be. At Mosaic, we believe God made us to grow and reflect His character more and more. Each of us is somewhere on this journey. Where you are may not be as important as where you are headed. Are you changing? Has there been some transformation in your life? We'd love to hear about it! In this most recent chapter of the popular series, Harry tries to figure out unanswered questions from the past and moves closer and closer to his ultimate confrontation with the evil Lord Voldemort.
There is a similar story in the bible about a guy that tries to figure out who he is and what his role will be in the epic conflict of his time. It just so happens he is the "half-blood" Prince of Egypt... Moses. Would you believe that you probably have a lot in common with the 10 Commandments guy? Come this Sunday and find out!

Angels and Demons
One of the oldest conversations in the history of humanity is whether or not life with God is really worth it. Or are we better off on our own?
Does God really exist? Which religion is the right one? What about science and the evidence against God? What about evil and suffering? Can science and religion truly co-exist?
Those are some of the questions that the movie "Angels & Demons" examines. Regardless of whether you are a fan of Dan Brown (or Tom Hanks), these questions and ideas seem to be more and more at the forefront of our world today. We'll look at some of these questions and their implications on Sunday.
Bring a friend, and bring an open mind. See you Sunday!

Terminator: Salvation If you’re reading this message… you are the resistance! The plot of the movie is simple: wipe out humanity. That’s what a terminator does… and the epic struggle for survival ensues – people fighting for their very existence. And we can all relate to the humans, right? I mean, how do you not root for your own species! Ironically, or maybe, coincidentally, this is the story of the Bible – the progressive elimination of humanity! God created people to reflect Him, an image of his heart and character of generosity, wisdom, love and courage. So, being human is a good thing! Early on and over time, people have drifted away from that life and in essence, our “humanness.” We have tried and fought to regain it, but seem to come up short. Just look at history. It seems our salvation will come from something outside of ourselves. Will mankind become truly human again? Join the conversation at Mosaic this Sunday and find out?

Don't GO to Church, BE The Church
Teaching Series: DON'T GO TO CHURCH!
Yep, that's right... stop going to a place hoping that it will
change some of the things in your life.
I stopped going to church years ago.

you're at it... bring some other people that don't want to go to
church.
New Teaching Series!
What if what you've been told is not true? What if that's not
the way things really are? Could it be time to rethink
EVERYTHING you believe?
Just some of the topics we'll be rethinking:
Religion, The Rules!, Marriage, Prosperity and Prayer.
Mosaic begins a new teaching series this weekend that explores the themes and ideas of current movies. Most movies are well told stories that speak to our everyday hopes, fears and dreams. People may be surprised how often Jesus connected to everyday life and then related it to the Kingdom of God. We'll start with some basic issues...
This Sunday, Mosaic begins a series called, "A life the matters." Every person matters greatly, but we can choose, or by default, live a life that makes little to no impact on others or the world around us. What if you could actually move towards the marriage, career, relationships and ministry that you've always wanted and not just what you're stuck with? We'll explore the story of Nehemiah and his mission.
I like God, It's Christians I Can't Stand
Not really into "church?" Neither is Mosaic. Join us for a 2-part series following Easter called, "God is OK, It's Christians I can't stand." Join the conversation about living a life of faith without being part of the freak show.
What Love Is...
The 49 days before Easter have been celebrated and observed by some
Christian traditions as the season of Lent. The Lentil period begins on Ash
Wednesday and concludes with Holy Week or "Passion Week."
This naming was intended to capture an element of Easter that illustrates
the "Passion" Christ displayed by offering his life for us. This kind of
love seems different than the everyday kind... or does it? How can an
execution, a death be a picture of love?
Many of us seek to discover what love truly is. On the Sunday after
Valentines Day, February 17, Mosaic begins a new teaching series called
"what love is..." Each week, we'll search for true love in all of it's raw
beauty.
Revolution
Who are you becoming?
Most of us have been trying to figure out who we are... trying to find
ourselves... getting in touch with our inner being... as if it is a secret
out there somewhere.
How's that working out for you?
It seems that we are resigned to being who we are, and we spend much of our
time, love and resources trying to change our circumstances. What if we have
it backwards? What if, for the most part, we cannot choose or control how
life will come at us?
When God walked the earth as Jesus, He told us to be good soil, be a
faithful servant, and the true friend - as if we could choose to be those
things!
He implied that each of us can choose the kind of person we will be.
If that is true then... who are you becoming?
Join Mosaic for a new teaching series called "Revolution!"
Among Us
Many of us have a picture of God as far off and in accessible. We create
elaborate systems of faith that offer a faint hope of being able to
connect... to get a small prayer through... maybe. In addition, we create
rituals and jump through a lot of religious hoops in an effort to appease a
god that is probably not that happy with us.
How's that working out?
Jesus seems different.
In scripture, we see a creator that doesn't remain aloof but instead,
actually interacts with men and women in space and time, right here where we
live!
In fact, one of the most radically new spiritual ideas at the time is the
concept that, for awhile, God walked among us. Could this be true? Did He
actually become one of us?
Join Mosaic for an honest look at the humanity of God, as the man Jesus.
5 very human moments:
Nov. 25 - Perspective, explaining the big picture on the way to Emmaus.
Dec. 2 - Death, facing the end just like the rest of us.
Dec. 9 - Decision, being honest about fear and hope.
Dec. 15 - Desire, experiencing temptation in the desert.
Dec. 23 - Birth, vulnerability for the sake of others.
Core Values
It just doesn't matter...
You might spend hours researching nutrition and exercise... but that will
not make you healthy.
You might wear a yellow bracelet... but that doesn't stop cancer.
You may know more than anyone else about food production and hunger in
Africa... but that doesn't feed a child.
You may believe in God... but it doesn't really change your life, or
anything else.
None of that matters unless you care about it.
You may believe something to be true, but it does not impact your life, or
anyone else's, unless you care about it.
What really matters to you?
Could someone observe your actions, how you spend your time and resources,
and make a pretty good guess at the things you care about most?
Just look at our day planners and our check books and you get the picture of
what our core values are. You may not be aware of them or you may not have
consciously decided them, but each of our lives reflect our core values.
What are yours?
Ask someone that knows you.
At Mosaic, we have chosen 5 core values to protect what we, as a community,
care about.
We have a statement of belief, some core convictions, but if you really want
to know who we are - no, change that - if you really want to know who we are
becoming, check out our
core values. page.
Hard Core, man.
That's what matters!
